Will we ever know? Perhaps it's only a $9 ticket to a cosmic joke, a voyeur's guide to transcendence with all the reality of a planetarium. A mortal's theory of an infinity where there is no long climb down into the day after with its reflections and newspaper reports.

With our senses snapping back to the boundaries of the nervous system we pick up the front page news. The Sentinel and Journal are grounded in statistics, surface impressions. If you did not attend the Pink Floyd concert, don't be misled. We were more than a record crowd and $2-million worth of special effects and 100-odd arrests. Larger, even, than the unwritten significance of the Sentinel and Journal write-ups: that, for the record, rock has become culturally viable.

For 25 years a changing climate has gradually redesigned the musical landscape from an impoverished desert to a tropical paradise, replete with its lethal byproducts. It nourished the roots of rock and roll in a subsoil network subtle enough for those who wanted to look the other way. Finally, in the Year of Our Lord 1977 a weatherman came along to tell them which way the wind was blowing. The weatherman was respectable and persuasive and wrote for an established newspaper. Be it known that we are official, institutionalized. We play a Meaningful Role in American society.

If Pink Floyd's Milwaukee concert culminated the Rock of Ages into the present and consequently - as advertised - formed a launching pad into the future, a little perspective is involved.

Assuming, as most of us do, that the hippie era has passed, we are fortunate it planted a few seeds. Communal consciousness, psychedelia, light shows extraordinaire - they all flowered at County Stadium last week. Remember, Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd was founded ten years ago. Apart from the influence of personal changes and the evolution of pop music, their music has remained consistent.

As for community, the audience of 65,000 showed the bright side of human nature - peaceful, neighborly, respectful. Not unlike all those rock festivals of our memory, a mass of friendly faces bore a larger truth: a collective mission sanctioning the power of both audience and music. It was a heady, self-indulgent throwback to the '60s.

Psychedelia and light shows - Pink Floyd has taken them to a state of fine art. Abstract, saturating the senses, cathartic as ever.

Aside from those who either got busted or injured in the gate-opening rush to be first, the show should have sent no one home complaining. It fulfilled its promise by being all a Stadium concert could hope to be. It used the Stadium to its advantage.

That's because all the nagging problems - traffic jams, distant seating, outfield overcrowding - of a Stadium concert were indigenous to a Pink Floyd show, one that realized itself only as it was so presented. Sure, a nightclub or theater provides intimacy, lower ticket prices, no traffic hassles. But you don't go to a nightclub to see Pink Floyd. Any drawbacks of the Stadium are forgiven as parts of the euphoric whole.

To appreciate this, one need only compare Pink Floyd to the Rolling Stones and/or Day on the Green. Offering just music, the Stones were unable to reach the distant multitude to whom Mick Jagger appeared no bigger than an ant. And the Stones' direct, honest music was consumed by time and space. It was a live concert reduced to a movie on a 17-inch screen, the build-up as stimulating - but ultimately unsatisfying - as a Playboy/Playgirl centerfold.

Not only that, but the Stones played Milwaukee out of context, an imitation. To see the Stones as the Stones, you would have to return to their beginnings in some rowdy London bar. By 1975 they were a reputation trespassing in centerfield.

The baseball stadium lost its ego under the expert direction of Pink Floyd. The infield shone as a diamond and the True Blue Brew Crew banner hung over the bleachers, but the augmentation of light and film and props built a saucerful of secrets, decorated with music whose feedback and distortion came custom-made to the vastness.

By their flamboyancy and rhythmic manipulation of the audience, Pink Floyd's irony is that the fastest sellout and record crowd indicated a pop appeal the band has determined could not be reproduced by popular demand. Summerfest again this year will sport a rock stage inundated by second-rate bands carbon-copying all the pop hits. Close your eyes and with a friendly imagination you might be listening to Aerosmith, Joe Walsh, REO. Such is the marketability synonymous with pop. Here's Pink Floyd, the hottest concert draw going, beyond reach. If their songs are not all that difficult to locate on a keyboard or guitar neck, wouldn't you as a band look woefully silly in doing them? Heavens, you'd be a fool to try. Despite its popularity Pink Floyd has managed to co-opt itself.

Back at the stadium we nevertheless endure transgressions upon logic. Excesses of drug laws and stardom puncture our cozy fantasy as if to remind us that, indeed, we are only in a planetarium.

Not to confuse the uniformed officer standing by the concession stand more interested in munching a hot dog with that very important character in blue windbreaker and civvies making strategy on his walkie-talkie, we suffer once more the immortality of enforced morality. Most of the drug arrests were for marijuana possession, though - as the Journal chauvinistically reassured - most bustees were not residents of Milwaukee County (whew!). If those arrested were to be faulted for incredibly stupid judgment as to the logistics of their lawbreaking, they remain as pitiful casualties who must complete the toll near the end of every war. That pot laws (and, I submit, all drug statutes) are hypocrisies defending themselves to their burned-out delusions; that such policework is more dangerous than protective, are intelligent appraisals worth no further comment.

Then, there is the greed of stardom, for which the rest of us pay in the end. If, as I've been told, the Floyds are really nice guys uninterested in capitalistic opulence, I still question their need to bask backstage in a tent spiked with a swimming pool, foosball, pinball and waitresses when the economics of rock are exaggerated enough. If the ticket price was acceptable, and if there is an enormous road crew, if the pigs and inflated father figure and film screen and lights and sparks do cost two million pretty pennies, they are given expenses against which a bottom line of profit is predetermined by the movers and shakers. Upon such is regulated the ticket price to the consumer.

Ah, but the crescendo of guitar and organ crash into concentric circles of film, disappearing symmetrically upon waves of feedback into the silent eternity of night. The waves are pulled out to a sea of 60,000 candles. The waves catch one last magnetic rush out of the void. One last high tide which can only be generated by the dark side of the moon. Upon such is regulated tomorrow's long descent. Alas the show was sold out , so I waited outside as the band started....However someone took mercy on me and my brother Peder and in we went! It was a rockin' show with Karl Precoda playing Harmony Rocket stuffed with fiberglass and a great cover of the Stones "west coast under assistant promo man" as I recall. However I was sans cassette recorder so I wasn't able to hear again those dulcet tones...Until lately! http://rapidshare.com/files/39488522/ds1982-02-13_vbr_mp3.zip.html
(This is not the Madison show but one from Feb. 2nd 1982)
http://rapidshare.com/files/39561838/ds1982-12-02.flac_vbr_mp3.zip.html
(and another from December 1982)
P.S. special thanks to Steve Wynn and Archive.org

VELVET UNDERGROUND ITALIAN TV 1966

Here is a incredible hour of the VU broadcast on Italian Television way back when. The recording technique and studio layout for the basic backing tracks were nothing especially unusual except that maximum possible separation was attempted. Poor separation for a quad remix of this type could prove very disturbing. This was no problem in most cases, as many instruments were overdubbed rather than laid down on the basic track. The Kepex system was used as a noise gate on all the 16 tracks for the reduction, and also in the earlier stages to improve separation between individual drums on the basic recording. Further use of Kepex enabled decay times of various tracks to be altered; the heartbeat on the introduction to the album was, in fact, a Kepexed bass drum.

LOVE's FOREVER CHANGES MONO LP

This arrived yesterday via the US mail and I wanted to post it asap: the elusive monophonic pressing of Love's classic "Forever Changes". I'm guessing it was the Gaslight but, whatever: It was a very small club in the cellar of a building on Bleecker Street.

Now, we were there to see Wainwright and quite excited at the prospect of actually getting to watch him perform live. We hadn't really paid any attention to the rest of the bill. Keep in mind that this was a very small folk club.

The opening act was a British band about which I really didn't know much: It was Soft Machine, featuring Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean, and Mike Ratledge. The music turned out to be a wall of sound (though not in the Phil Spector sense) as well as being very, very loud. In a very, very small club. Think of the advertisement of the guy in the chair being blown back by his new stereo. Our ears were ripped open, and our bodies pinned to the wall.
Wainwright came out and did a set. Frequently his tongue would be hanging out of his mouth. "Dead Skunk" had not yet come out, so the material was mostly from his first two albums.
BY LOUIS BLACK

EASTER EVERYWHERE MONO PROMO L.P.

A few years ago I was lucky enough to find this gem at Waterloo Records here in Austin. Early in 1968, he met experimental film director Jérôme Laperrousaz and told him he was looking for musicians to form a band. The latter forwarded the request to a local band called Expression, whose lead guitarist had just left. The rhythm section, consisting of Patrick Fontaine (bass) and Marc Blanc (drums), was recruited and played its first gig with Allen only a few days later, still under the name of Expression. The set consisted of two Soft Machine numbers, "Why Are We Sleeping?" and "We Did It Again", mixed with spontaneous improvisations. They subsequently took the name of Bananamoon.
Then came May '68 and the student riots in Paris. Daevid Allen was forced to leave Paris with his partner Gilli Smyth. The group reunited in July at the Avignon festival, opening for the jazz group of vibraphonist Gunter Hampel. This was followed by a few gigs. Then they embarked for Mallorca, staying at Allen's house in Deya. At the end of the year they returned to France, spending the Winter at Bob Bénamou's ashram in Monteaulieu, near Nyons (Drôme). It was during this period that the trio recorded several demos for the Barclay label. This led to nothing, however, and the three members went their separate ways : Allen resurrected the Gong project, while Fontaine and Blanc went back to Paris to form Ame Son (in 1974, he opened for Gong on a French tour when playing in the band of English vibraphonist Robert Wood). Their recordings survived, however, and thanks to the efforts of longtime fan Thierry Leroy (who had financed Gong's 1992 comeback album Shapeshifter), were released on CD in 1993 under the title Je Ne Fum' Pas Des Bananes.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='MARC BOLAN T.
